Career Coaching = Your Accountability Partner |
Is finding that perfect job becoming more and more elusive, Career Coaching is a fantastic method of ensuring that you do not become frustrated and un-motivated, career coaching provides you with support, tips, advice, and above all we provide you with an Accountability Partner, especially necessary if you are one of the 60% of employees mentioned below and you would like to become one of the happy 40%
Are you in the right job? In a recent survey it was revealed that 60% of employees are not happy in their current role. This figure is actually very frightening, more than half of the people reading this page are unhappy with their current role.
Initially I did not believe this figure, I thought to myself "I cannot imagine such unhappiness exists in so many organisations." Further consideration of this extraordinary figure led me to reconsider, I did in the end agree that this could be the case. How could this be? Why? When did this happen? These and many more questions were running through my mind.
It became obvious in the end that sadly this was probably an accurate description of working life, I was subtly reminded of this by two friends, they both had different roles within completely different environments.
One of my friends appeared content with life and the other was distraught and thoroughly miserable.
Case Study - Happy!
When asked about work, my friend who was content with his job, informed me that his work served a purpose. It allowed him the opportunity to pay his bills and his work did not overspill into his personal life, he was happy with his role and he put in 100% at all times, he even enjoyed his job.
The key to his happiness was that he had many outside work interests, he was keen that work did not impact on these interests, he therefore had a purpose in his life and that work was only a small part of that purpose, he managed to fulfill his needs with other activities.
His happiness was derived from those other interests, work was only a small part of his overall purpose and he never questioned his work in relation to happiness, and his definition of work fitted exactly with his own needs and desires. Case Study - Unhappy!
For a total and absolute contrast, another friend was very unhappy, being aware of her need to pay her bills and live, she was not able to function in her role and her performance dipped accordingly.
Further analysis revealed that her definition of work was at odds to her real definition, that being, a job were enjoyment fueled performance, the role she was carrying out was undoubtedly the wrong kind of role for her, she derived no sense of enjoyment and it became a struggle to perform at the required level, this under performance further fueled her unhappiness.
A near crisis was needed to allow her to come to the conclusion that there was indeed another way to work, her needs were not being met, which resulted in poor performance and ill health.
Her redefinition of work allowed her to realise that she could indeed enjoy work, she only needed to find out what would make her happy in work. Once this awareness was established her career choices became more obvious.
How Career Coaching Can Help! Both of the above case studies clearly indicate that there are certain basic human needs which need to be met before we can achieve happiness. Career Coaching will help you to understand which needs are being met and which needs are not.
Once it is understood, and your awareness levels are raised accordingly, you will then be much more likely to achieve your goals.
If you are convinced that your current role is not meeting your needs, and you are sure that your current role can never do so(check with friends and family to assess your happiness at work before making any life changing decisions)this is a good time to redefine your definition of work.
