How To Manage Your Lost Career
Rediscover your career - Rescue yourself from the doldrums |
Where is your career going at the moment? Do you feel that you are one of the many thousands of people who have suddenly found themselves in a position where the job that they do does not meet their needs, their aspirations, purpose and desire are seriously affected by unfulfilling work?
Having just read and watched a TV news report, which stated that over two thirds of the working population in the UK are dissatisfied with their current job.
After reflecting for a while on this staggering statistic, It became apparent that this may be the same in many more countries throughout the world.
Once again we are seemingly in a position where our basic human needs are being met, such as food, shelter, clothing etc, but our emotional needs are not being met.
The Pursuit of Happiness
Chris Gardner the real person that Will Smith played in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, initially had to meet basic human needs of shelter and food for himself and his son, there was though something else driving him, from an emotional point of view.
Chris knew that there was more to life than earning millions of dollars, he knew that by taking an unpaid job he was actually making a decision to provide for his son, overcoming many obstacles along the way, proving that given the circumstances anybody can achieve all that they desire.
Chris Gardener made conscious decisions about the kind of work he was to do, and how he was going to achieve it, he decided against the Gordon Gekko approach to success, an approach that he could just as easily have made had his emotional needs not been so strong.
Back to the news article that two thirds of UK workers are unfulfilled! the response from the people who took part in the survey, suggested that they wished they could do more compassionate work, one respondent even suggested that organisation should allow their staff to participate in part time charity work, whilst still on the payroll of that company
Many of the respondents also suggested that they would like to change careers, from high flying business executives to yoga teachers, animal welfare officers, landscape gardeners and climate change campaigners, strongly suggesting that the society we live in becoming less selfish than once thought.
