Knowledge of Oneself - The greatest Knowledge of all

Knowledge was once described as power, a very accurate description some might say, a better description though would have been applied knowledge is power.

The same can also be said of our own understanding, that understanding we have of our selves. Our very own self-awareness, when applied is a particularly powerful experience. Psychologists have described human self-awareness as a paradox, a paradox with three core elements.

Imagination

The first paradox is very enlightening, when we analyse our imaginations, we will find that our imagination has no boundaries, we can do anything in our imaginations, we can fly, we can climb the highest mountain, we can win the world cup in any sport. However, the reality is that our reality is just that real! In our real lives we are held back with boundaries, boundaries of physics, boundaries of law. Boundaries of beliefs, especially those limiting beliefs we occasionally allow to rule our lives. We are limited to this world, our imaginations though allow us to transcend those boundaries.

The Human Spirit

The human spirit is the second paradox, the human spirit can inspire, motivate and overcome human frailties. Our spirit lifts us in times of crisis, in times of distress and discomfort. Our spirit provides us with the strength and desire to carry out noble actions, our spirit can help us to make decisions and follow our beliefs, it can also provide some with the desired motivation and beliefs to carry out unspeakable horrors, and acts of cruelty.

Our spirit can also be described as will, we all have will, this will allows us to be swayed occasionally, great leaders can sway an entire nation with a strong will, to hold a belief whether that belief be good or bad...we need only to look back at history to see this reality.

Hope Motivates Us

Our lives are motivated by hope, a hope that we can make a difference, a hope that we can learn, grow and develop, to make things better. We know that we will one day leave this world, but we still occasionally hope for eternal life.

These paradoxes tell us one simple thing, that imagination, hope and spirit form the basis of the human condition.

The Human Condition

It is that human condition which allows us to shine, to succeed, to achieve, but it also allows us to fail, that is the human condition, and without it the world would be a less attractive place, all walks of life have benefited from the human condition, from arts and science to business and politics.

Self Awareness

Developing self-awareness is based on knowledge, knowledge of your spirit, of your hope and of your imagination. And of course your basic human needs. If you can imagine something, your spirit and hope will combine to ensure that you have the skills required to achieve that which you have imagined.

To have self-awareness requires you to be self aware, to analyse your beliefs, your values and your needs.

Achievement is not simple nor easy, hard work and commitment are essential elements to your success, our beliefs and values can frequently clash, and this conflict can lead you to having your needs being met by inappropriate vehicles (human experiences) To begin your journey towards self-awareness you will need to have a plan, to set goals and evaluate the plan and your goals at every opportunity.

Our actions are motivated by hope, and as they say hope springs eternal, hope gets us out of bed and it drives us forward.

Hope alone may not be enough, we occasionally need help, and the help that is available to the citizens of the world in the 21st century is wonderful and there is a lot of it about.

The Emotional Needs Audit

In line with the ethos of taking action, and that of developing self-awareness would you like to undertake an emotional needs audit?

Our emotional needs, and how they are met form the basis of good mental health, (as Frasier used to say!) In conjunction with the Human Givens Approach, an emotioanl needs audit has been developed.

To take advantage of this great opportunity to identify your needs and to find out if they are being met in a healthy and balanced way please contact us here at Three Cornerstones Coaching.

Not only is this a great action step, it is also an amazing tool in developing self-awareness, find out if you give and receive enough attention, check whether you are being sufficiently challenged, both physically and mentally.

Gain understanding for the need for privacy, status that is recognised and whether you have enough control. The audit is similar to that of Maslow's Hierachy of Needs, this hierachy is developed and expanded to provide a more holistic assessment of our human needs.

Self Awareness and Knowledge

No matter what kind of you help you seek and in whatever form that takes, you can be certain of one thing, that taking action will, without doubt contribute to your spirit and by default it will contribute to your own self awareness.

Now that you are more self aware, you will then be able to apply the knowledge that you have gained, and you know what applied knowledge can do for you.

It can give you power. So take some action today, do something to build your own self-awareness, whether that action is buying something, reading something or simply listening to a work colleague or family member, whatever action you take please try to take action of some kind…you will not regret it.

For an example of how taking action can lead to amazing things, please visit Encouraging Life Changes where you will see at first hand the benefits of taking action, whilst at the same time you will hopefully be inspired enough to take your own life changing action steps.

If that wasn't enough Encouraging Life Changes is an amazing site which offers an alternative approach to inspiration and motivation by using images of everyday life inspire us to view things differently metaphor in action if you will.

I am reminded of a quote I heard recently...."You don't see something until you have the right metaphor to let you perceive it."

Here is a sample of the truly inspirational work available at Encouraging Life Changes. This example is a particular favorite of mine.
