Take Control of your Personal Projects |
As we have already discovered, work projects can take up a lot of your time and how you manage those new situations is important to maintain a balance.
Work changes frequently, goals are set, new challenges are just around the corner, and that can be said of our home life.
Life events have an impact upon us as human beings, and it is very important not to forget that we are human beings, and as human beings events can often dictate our futures, many will be out of our control, political unrest, extreme weather conditions, war and environmental disasters. All of these events are obviously out of our control, we do though have influence over our own lives.
The influence we have over our lives is innate, and as the human brain is such a wonderful part of us, our brains give us many tools to help us to exert that influence.
Those tools are
- The ability to develop complex long term memory.
- The ability to build rapport, empathise and connect with others.
- Imagination which can allow us to focus our attention away from our emotions in order to problem solve more objectively.
- A conscious, rational mind that can check out our emotions, ask questions, analyse (the left hemisphere of your brain).
- The ability to "know"- understand the world unconsciously through metaphorical pattern matching ( the right hemisphere of your brain).
- An observing self - that part of us that can step back, be more objective and recognise itself as a unique centre of awareness apart from intellect, emotion and conditioning.
- A dreaming brain that preserves the integrity of our genetic inheritance every night by metaphorically defusing emotionally arousing introspections not acted out the previous day.
Events at home can be managed; we can control our home life.
This can be said of home projects, and by home projects we mean something which takes up a lot of your time, caring for an elderly relative or spouse for example, but it need not be strictly linked to a family member, it could be a community event, a charitable event. Whatever the “Project” it is vital to your success to communicate any such changes to your employer.
As making decisions regarding work have an impact on your home life, the same is true of home projects affecting work.
In the spirit of true communication, it is therefore preferable to inform your employer that you are undertaking a project and from that initial communication you will be better placed to negotiate flexi-time, understanding and compassion from your boss.
Raising the awareness of your project within the team for example will surely promote compassion; colleagues will be more willing to take up any slack for a week or so if they know the reason why you are not able to commit 100% of your energy to a work team or project.
Clearly if your communication skills are highly tuned, your colleagues will understand and acknowledge your situation with much more compassion, if they know something of the cause, they may even be able to help.
Set Achievable Goals in your Projects.
Setting Goals, or being stretched both physically and mentally, has been identified as one of the recognised innate human needs we all have, occasionally help is needed when setting goals, the following software is an excellent resource.
