Psychometric tests are usually used as pre employment tests, although occasionally they are used in career progression situations.
They are used by recruitment agencies and employers to test attributes such as:

- Aptitude
- Personality
They are also useful for providing employers with valuable insight into how well you might work with others. How you will cope with stress, plus assessing your intellectual coping mechanisms, in short will you be able to cope with the demands of the job.
Controversial uses of Psychometric Testing
Although there is no verified research into this particular use of psychometric testing, there is a growing trend within business to use these tests to identify your integrity and honesty, as well as whether you have a pre-disposition to anger.
They are seen as controversial because of the lack of research and their validity to measure in these situations, though they are becoming popular...watch out for those tests.

The amount of organisations who use this type of testing is widespread, in the US, 80% of the Fortune 500 companies use this type of testing.
In the UK 75% of the Times Top 100 companies use psychometric tests.
What the tests should be
The tests should be:-
- Objective: The score must not be affected by the testers' beliefs or values
- Standardised: It must be administered under controlled conditions
- Reliable: It must minimise and quantify any intrinsic errors
- Predictive: It must make an accurate prediction of performance
- Non Discriminatory: It must not disadvantage any group on the basis of; gender, culture or ethnicity
